Bluesails fishing guides are also about taking fanatical care of the gear and tackle, and will ensure that drags function smoothly, roller guides or rings turn or run freely, and reels are spooled with new or undamaged line, so that we don’t lose a fish with a hook and a hundred yards of line trailing behind it!  Of course, new circle hooks will be employed if necessary to ensure positive hook-ups.

The winning edge of Bluesails consists of our guide’s copious local knowledge combined with the bait, lure and technique that has been proven effective time & time again in these waters. We feel that you’re no more than a tour guide if you’re dependent on the local skippers for results. The importance of a reliable guide cannot be more emphasized when the fishing gets tough, to still produce the results.

Generally, hiring a professional guide is a good way to save time and hassle, and you can gain a brief insight into their years of specialized knowledge. Communication & language issues can also get in the flow of things without the guide’s assistance.

Bluesails guides & crew have a real respect for the sea & the marine critters that live in it. Each Billfish is always carefully released after a quick photo session and is revived at boatside until it can take off under its own power.

Lastly, good guides must practice due diligence with regards to safety onboard as Sails are tenacious, & being the smaller species of the Billfish family are likely to pose more danger than larger Billfish as they’re faster & more agile. Safety first, fish second!

A little personal trivia about the main guide, Mike Tan:

Born 1969 in Singapore, a Pisces (the sign of the fish!), started fishing at age 6, a certified PADI diver, USPA skydiver, advanced driver & experienced 4WDriver. College & university completed in Montreal, Canada. Has therefore endured several long, cold, long (and did we mention long?) winters there & did cross-country & downhill skiing as well as ice-fishing. In the summers, spent all his free time scooping walleye, pike, muskies & bass from the St. Lawrence River and the great lakes. Travelled to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Florida to escape the Canadian winters, and had the privilege of fishing with and being mentored by many big game skippers and crew in these places. Believes that big game fishing is all about passion, dedication, local knowledge, & confidence, but that at the end of the day you still need an element of luck & mother-nature’s co-operation. Is happy to have found a “home” for consistent billfish action and that the days of long anticipation and elaborate trolling for many hrs for only a few (if any) strikes are long gone. Is known to boldly proclaim that he has gills and even has webbed-fingers to prove it! Possesses an uncanny ability to sniff Sailers on the wind, predict weather & get his clients hooked up with piscatorial excitement.
